Week Thirteen: Slide sharing

We went to a Picasso exhibit in France last November. The exhibit was in a quarry and the pictures were projected on the walls of a quarry. It was quite spectacular. I've made the slide show on Animoto and uploaded it to YouTube.

Week Ten: Videos

Here's a very humorous video:

It took a little work to get this posted.

Week Nine: Instant Messaging

I started using instant messaging when I was in library school at Syracuse. We use this technology to do a pretend reference interview. It was a bit awkward because you miss the non-verbal cues.

We now use Trillian at work and there's not a drawback to missing the nonverbal hints because the messages are more straightforward.

Week Eight: Cloud Computing

I think this is a great idea. I wrote a nonfiction book many years ago (before the Internet even) and my editor and I had to send changes back and forth through the mail system. It would have been so much easier in the cloud. I can also see that posting staff meeting minutes to the cloud would work well.

My collaboration project will be processed through this blog. What I'd like to know is: what are some of the funny (outrageous) incidents that have happened to you in your work as a librarian?

I will post them in a few weeks.

Week Seven: Microblogging

1. I had fun looking for people to follow. I'm following Stephen Fry, John Cleese, Dr. Oz, Sanjay Gupta, the New York Public Library and TripAdvisor.

2. I did find it easy. I had to stop myself from following more people.

3. There hasn't been time for much response. I imagine the New York Public Library tweets will be valuable in my job. The others are just for fun.

4. Microblogging would be valuable in following people who are at a convention when I couldn't go. Last year we could follow the meeting of the Library Board when they were discussing a policy change.

**********
We have a discussion every Wednesday about that week's lesson. We talked about criminals who follow twitter and foursquare to find out where people are. Yesterday when I was working a man came up and said he was using foursquare and telling people he was at the library.

I watched the speech "How Social Media Can Make History". Most of it dealt with news getting out about an earthquake in China even though the Chinese government didn't approve.

Week Six: Tagging and Social Bookmarking

I tried to sign in to Delicious for about three days and kept getting the message "Sorry we are having temporary problems."

I did put in some search terms and found sites that were interesting. My favorite activity is folk dancing and that is one of the search terms I used. I found a group that I hadn't thought about in years.

In my job, I could use the site for finding information about story times and programs that can be done without a lot of money.
